Matthew Gallagher

It is with huge sadness that we announce the very sudden death of Matthew Gallagher on 29th December, aged 46.

Matthew was a director of Bowley and Gallagher Funeral Directors, Preston Road. Along with Paul Bowley he brought a refreshing and different insight into how he thought the modern day funeral directors premises should look and feel. He has certainly left his mark within this family business with our bright modern office, using colour and furnishings that compliment the building and company use.

Alongside his role within the business, Matthew was a valued member and part of the governing body in The Independent Funeral Directors College, joining in 2007. He was also an Executive member of SAIF Charter, the pre-paid funeral planning arm of the profession of which he was a staunch supporter, sitting on the executive and chairing one of the committees.

Growing up in Cuckfield and latterly living in Brighton, Matthew was always keen to support local charities with advertising, sponsorship and lending a personal hand. In 2019 he threw himself with his usual enthusiasm into offering up our premises to local artists for the Brighton Festival Open Houses, it was a resounding success, we have made lovely new friends, some of whom are returning again this year.

Matthew will be so very missed, not just here in Brighton but by staff and friends of our offices in Hassocks, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath. His smile, infectious laugh and huge sense of fun is a legacy that will stay with us all.

His funeral took place on Saturday 18th January at Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield.
